Clear the clutter this spring!

Few household chores are as satisfying as a declutter. With spring traditionally the season for deep cleans, online retailer of storage solutions PlasticBoxShop is encouraging us to go one step further and clear some clutter too.

A tidy home leads to a more relaxing environment. If your home is filled with clutter, it will undoubtedly affect your stress levels. An untidy house is a sign of an untidy mind, as the adage goes, and you may find it difficult to relax in a cluttered home. This can prevent you from recharging your batteries at the end of each day, which can have a knock-on negative impact on your overall wellbeing.

Reclaim your home from clutter!

There are three general methods of decluttering the home. Pick the one that will work best for you.

Everything at once: This is the most extreme form of decluttering and involves collecting every single one of the possessions in your home together and sorting through them in one go. It sounds dramatic and will be too much for some people to handle, but works well for others who like to take the bull by the horns and tackle issues head on. Set aside a full day or a weekend, and carefully consider every item you own and whether or not you still need it in your life.

Bit by bit: The most common method of decluttering, this involves cutting back on your clutter gradually, often over a period of months. Pick a manageable space — a drawer, a shelf or a desk — and declutter only that, before moving on to another space. Don’t bite off more than you can chew, especially if you’re a natural hoarder and decluttering is alien to you.

An item a day for a year: This is a popular twist on the bit by bit method and helps develop a habit for clearing clutter. It involves getting rid of one possession every single day for an entire year, leaving you with significantly less stuff once twelve months have passed. Of course, there’s no need to restrict yourself to one item a day, but this rule keeps minimalism at the forefront of your mind and can prevent you from slipping back into old habits.

Gary Lyons, founder and managing director of PlasticBoxShop, says, “Whichever method you choose, pick an area of your home with belongings you’re less emotionally attached to, such as a home office or even the kitchen. Once you’ve got your decluttering underway, you’ll be better equipped to deal with items such as toys and books the kids have grown out of and other childhood keepsakes.”

PlasticBoxShop’s tips for keeping your home tidy

  • Use available space in your loft, garage and shed. As you will be less concerned about the aesthetics there, you can be purely practical and add loads of extra storage space on surfaces and walls. Clear storage boxes help you to see at a glance what’s stored inside.
  • Underbed storage boxes are great for keeping things out of site and utilising available space. They work just as well under sofas too!
  • Keep shoes and boots organised with stackable shoe storage boxes – you can even colour-code them for seasonal wear, or give each member of the family their own colour.
  • Using kitchen wall space for storage – such as magnetic knife racks – can free up valuable counter space.
  • Mirrored cabinets in the bathroom are a practical way of keeping toiletries clutter out of sight.
