Hello BEER, a new mobile training app designed to upskill bartenders on beer and cider service quality, has launched with a free trial for all UK bar staff. With much of the UK on-trade currently furloughed, Hello BEER allows operators to engage staff with easily digestible mobile training ahead of pubs reopening.
Created in collaboration by HEINEKEN and Hello Forward Ltd., the app is the latest in a series of support measures announced by HEINEKEN for the UK on-trade, following the launch of payment app Swifty and The Pub Collective online resource.
Hello BEER was created to help staff understand and recommend different types of beer and cider, educate on the right serve for each as well as correct cellar maintenance and glassware care to reduce wastage and improve pint quality. Following best practice storage, glass care and pour techniques can also help operators reassure both staff and customers that their safety is priority.
Set-up is easy. Operators simply register their business and staff details on the Hello BEER website. Each staff member will then receive an SMS with a unique link to download the app for free and get started with their training.
Hello BEER’s eight courses can be completed by working staff or those on furlough and are delivered via a mixture of videos, challenges and exercises designed to maintain user engagement. Each section is kept to digestible size and length of time, enabling staff to quickly engage and learn – wherever they may be – in an easily-consumable, fun format. Operators can easily track the progress of their team via their personal dashboard.
Data shows the importance of staff training with 22% of UK sites serving beer at the wrong temperature – causing fobbing and lower customer satisfaction – and one in three pints served via a dirty line. By ensuring lines are clean and wastage is minimised through correct storage and great pouring techniques, operators could tap into an extra £25,000 profit per pub, per year. After lockdown, monitoring operating costs will be more essential than ever along with creating a memorable experience for customers – one they simply can’t get at home. By offering flexible training solutions to staff, operators will be better placed to reduce wastage and improve quality in outlet.
Following a successful trial with a leading national pub company, four out of five staff said they were likely to recommend Hello BEER to a friend or colleague. Furthermore, those who had less than six months experience in the industry were even more likely to recommend, demonstrating the value of Hello BEER as a resource for new employees.
