Our breakfast (repeatedly winning both AA and Visit England Breakfast awards), has been described as ‘exceptional’, ‘the best we’ve ever had’ and ‘fabulous’ amongst many other superlatives. Locally sourced items include free range eggs from Bamford, bacon, sausages and black pudding from our local butcher (using his own Gloucester Old Spot, Saddleback and Berkshire pigs), Derbyshire oatcakes and also milk (delivered in glass bottles – an important environmental plus point). The ingredients for breakfast items that we make ourselves also rely heavily on local tradespeople. These home-made items include the white and wholemeal breads, 6 or 7 preserves and 5 ‘own recipe’ compôtes (which might include goldenberries in orange and honey, golden raisins steeped in apple juice and grated ginger, dried apricots with cardomom and vanilla, Montmorency cherries in cinnamon and limoncello, poached home-grown rhubarb).
We are constantly making improvements to our breakfast and more recent ‘Breakfast Specials’ on the menu include scrambled eggs on our home-made wholemeal toast with smoked salmon, or chopped avocado with fresh mint and lime dressing on toast (or on a Derbyshire oatcake) topped with a poached egg and garnished with quartered cherry tomatoes or perhaps Eggs Benedict or Eggs Royale. We have also introduced the sweeter home-made granola alongside the unsweetened home-made muesli and our porridge (cooked overnight in the Aga). We now offer a very popular apple and mango juice (as well as the more traditional orange juice and/or apple juice). We are also happy to accommodate special dietary requirements (vegetarian, vegan, gluten free, wheat free or lactose intolerant) on request.
